I know there are really really big camping backpacks, but for something that's meant to be as a normal outdoor backpack, this is one of the biggest I have ever had. It basically takes up all of my back, all the way down to the middle of my behind, and rides up all the way to the top of my neck. Wearing and walking with this is an adventure in itself. So truthfully, I do no recommend this if you're just looking for a waterproof backpack. This is more of when you're looking for a waterproof backpack, plus something that can take you off the grid for a whole week. This is one heavy-duty backpack.I was not able to test this at the beach or pool, but I did try in my bathtub, and started with placing it right underneath the water faucet. It survived that mini-waterfall, and it started to float as the water level rose. So yes, it works fine as a waterproof backpack. There are not so many pockets as a true hiking / camping backpack, but that's because the main feature of this backpack is its waterproof ability, and not just water-resistant. Therefore, it might not be the perfect backpack if you're just traveling alone, as you'll have to pack everything you need in not so many pockets and compartments. So let's say if you have a lot of food, then you might have to put some of it in the main compartment and risk it smelling. But other than that, the waterproof feature of this backpack is a rare commodity, and should be in your arsenal of backpacks in case you need one, especially for emergencies.
