After removing the detachable pouch and filling it to its dimensions, this fits the bins at check-in and gates for the free personal item on Spirit and Frontier. That's what I needed, and this was on sale for twenty buckaroos.(My strategy to avoid an overzealous gate agent trying to get a bounty on charging the luggage fee: Tuck the straps into the back-side zipper and carry it by the handle as you approach the gate. Then put the top handle side to the right, against the flat metal side of the personal item bin, to ensure it doesn't poke out of the open slot on the left.)It's pretty comfortable for walking through an airport, and the chest strap helps in that. It is also very light, which is preferable for lugging around. The top handle feels well-stitched, but time may tell on that. It fits under the plane seat, though I did have one flight attendant ask me to turn it sideways to get the handle out of the feet area, and that was not easy.The zippers are not flapped for water-resistance, and it is a fairly thin layered material on the top and back. I got the white one, and it is easy to see water soaking into the outer material with temporary discoloration. Nothing inside got wet when running between vehicles and buildings when visiting Portland during a downpour, however.It is not a work backpack; storing and retrieving things for laptops or documents is not convenient due to the design of "one big zippered flap" being at one edge of the main cavity for everything that isn't flat. The flat laptop compartment is not sufficiently padded at the bottom either (which lead to the corner of my 17" gaming laptop cracking when putting it down a little too hard, apparently).This is for packing a lot of clothing or such, and maybe a few travel necessities, for a short trip on a low-cost airline when you don't want to pay for luggage upgrades. I look forward to using it for that and only that, expecting it to last for many trips over multiple years.
